Unity
Unity chronicles the history of the Orthodox Church in North America, beginning with its origins and spanning to today’s 700 parishes, missions, communities, monasteries and institutions in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
The seeds of the Orthodox Church were planted in Kodiak, Alaska in 1794 by eight missionaries from the Valaamo Monastery, which was in the Karelia region of Russia. They greatly impacted the native population, converting many to the Orthodox Christian faith.
The film not only touches on Church history, but also highlights its iconography. Shot in Russia and the U.S., Unity includes interviews with Russian historians, Russian and American clergy, parishioners and iconographers. The film’s story is framed by beautiful Orthodox chants.
Documentary, English and Russian (with English subtitles), 45 min.
